Great Black Hope

about

This was the last song I wrote for the record, and is about both the need for and futility of protest songs. It was inspired by two contrasting conversations. The first was with my girlfriend, who hates Bono, and she was going for the jugular about how his charity work seems to fuel his ego rather than actually help anyone. The second was with my friend Squibby at a King Blues show, where we were chatting about the contrast between the opening band and their trite sloganeering and Jamie from the King Blues obvious passion in bringing on some speakers from Love Music Hate Racism and the Sophie Lancaster charity to talk to the crowd. So the first verse is for irritating rock stars like Sting, Bono, Bob Geldof, Madonna, whoever, and the second verse is for Billy Bragg, The King Blues, Joe Strummer, Rage Against The Machine: people who mean what they say.

lyrics

This place is a fool’s paradise/I can sing about what i want without thinking twice/And all i know is that i can read and write/My responsibility is not to fight/If people come and decide to get in my way/They’ll see i don’t do it for them i do it for them i do it for me cos what i say i don’t really feel/i’m a showman not an activist you see/well i saw you on a march today/you had your hood pulled up and your mouth shouting away/and i can feel the passion in your voice/sometimes you make me think there might be a point/we need protest songs/only sing it if you mean it/we need protest songs/though they rarely work anyways/we need protest songs/though the singers rarely mean the words/we need protest songs/to get our viewpoints head/cos we won’t let the bastards win
