I've spent several years living on the Isle of Wight at various points in my life, and at one point in 2003/2004 it had the most incredible scene ever. All DIY shows, bands of every genre playing 3 or 4 times a week and always packed shows - it was insane. Than one by one the musicians starting heading towards a music college on the island called Platform 1, who churned people out the other end playing whatever pop-rock music was popular at the time. It totally killed the DIY scene there and a decade later it still hasn't recovered. That is what this song is about. Oh and the teacups bit at then end is about a (nameless) friends band who kept putting up pictures of them recording in a studio that were so cringingly posed I just HAD to take this piss. At the writing on our mugs is sitting on the album sleeve. Go look. That's some Metal Gear Solid shit right there.
