To Live Or Die In Shanklin Town

from First 3 on a CD by Bandit The Panther

about

I like to think of this song as the ‘flagship’ song of the record, in ht it is the one that sums up most of the other songs and what the record is about. Two Thousand and Whine!!! is primarily about frustration and the hole you find yourself in after going to university and having to come home afterwards, and the weirdness that comes from being in your twenties and everyone around you seems to b getting married or having ids, and you feel like you’re stuck in a rut. The Shanklin of the title is the little town live in on the Isle of Wight at the moment, and it is stupidly cut off from the world and you need to pay £15 on a ferry just to get to Southampton. The first time I played this live some woman asked me if I was serious about the line “to Live or die in Shanklin”. I corrected her quickly; it is intended as sarcasm because I hate the place.
